Legal update   Michele Zavos     November 15, 2018

Recently, my associate Rebekah DeHaven and I wrote an article on Parentage for the Maryland State Bar Association.   While some of the information is specific to Maryland law, much of it applies to every jurisdiction and should give you a pretty good idea of how to establish parentage in your family for the non-birth, non-adoptive, or non-genetic parent.  These are complex issues.  Our best advise is to ensure you have a second-parent adoption or other court order which establishes parental rights for BOTH parents (if there are two).  Feel free to call us with questions - we are glad to help.
